A little history of the Cohocton Public Library: 

Cohocton library services first began as a Bookmobile stop. Books were checked out weekly by Virginia Sirois. Around 1977 the bookmobile crashed and was not replaced, leaving Cohocton with no library services. Later that year a group of community members got together to form the Cohocton reading Center located at 15 South Main Street. The building was the carriage house of the Larrowe House- about 800 sq ft. 

In 1999 the board applied to become a chartered public library and received its provisional charter. In 2009 the library had outgrown the space of the building and sought a bigger location. The library was able to purchase its current building on Maple Avenue, the former Carpet Rack furniture store. In May 2011, books were moved from the original building to Maple Ave with the help of the Cohocton elementary students. Renovations have been ongoing in the building ever since. In 2024, the application was submitted for our absolute charter.

The Cohocton Public Library is part of a cooperative library system. This system is what allows us to circulate books among other local libraries, giving our patrons access to materials beyond our local collection. The Southern Tier Library System (STLS) is made up of 48 public library outlets across five counties. STLS is a New York State-chartered, cooperative public library system. As one of 23 systems in New York State, this System was created to enhance shared services and cooperation among member libraries. Their mission is to support all 48 libraries across Allegany, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates counties.
